The Puppy Kindergarten and Pet Manners class are taught together as one class. I have had success doing this for several years. Puppies and dogs are all taught the same behaviors and generally taught the same way, though the method may vary slightly from dog-to-dog. Puppies learn to interact with other puppies, young dogs, adult dogs, and people. Your individual training is puppy or dog appropriate and your Graduation Certificate will reflect the appropriate class.

    Puppy Kindergarten

This class teaches your puppy behaviors you want before they learn bad habits . Desired behaviors are taught and rewarded.
Teach your puppy manners. Emphasis on socializing, come, sit, down and house breaking. There's also a weekly discussion on a variety of topics. This is of particular interest to people who have never before owned a dog or puppy. Class is taught by Kath Cook, an AKC Certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. The class is geared to cover what you & your puppy need to take the AKC's S.T.A.R.Puppy test.

Need help with housebreaking? See my Puppy Housebreaking Flowchart. Download here.

  AKC's S.T.A.R. Puppy Program

S.T.A.R. (stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility) Puppy gives you and your puppy goals, teaching the owner to be a responsible owner and teaching basic skills to your puppy. A test is given frequently (generally the week following the end of a class) to owners and puppies that meet the requirements.

Puppy must be under 1 year old.
Puppy must have attended a minimum of 6 weeks of classes (Make up classes are available)
Classes must be taught by a Certified AKC CGC Evaluator
The test is open to all Blue Ribbon students
Test includes "Owner Behaviors", "Puppy Behaviors", and a Pre-Canine Good Citizenship Test Behaviors

    Pet Manners

Your adult dog is NOT too old to learn to be a well-mannered member of your family. I will teach you to train your adult dog how to sit, down, stand, stay, come. Just as in Puppy Kindergarten, we train the older puppies, young adults, and mature adult dogs by molding behavior using reward and/or substituting behavior . Corrections may be necessary on some dogs due to pulling when walking with the owner or resolving other undesirable behaviors. Your dog may not know what you want. I teach you to communicate with your dog.

Problems with a dominant dog? Read this reprint of "Every Dog Needs a Number". Download here.

    Better Pet Manners

This class is a continuation of what is taught in Puppy Kindergarten and Pet Manners. More complex heeling, longer stays and handlers leave their dogs. This is an goal oriented to take the AKC's CGC test and I add Rally Obedience exercises. Students graduating from this class can repeat or go into competition classes.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)  AKC Canine Good Citizen®

This class will help prepare you and your dog to earn a Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) certificate offered by the American Kennel Club. The test consists of 10 exercises including accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd, grooming, sit and down on command, reaction to another dog, coming when called, reaction to distraction and supervised separation. Taught by Kath Cook, an AKC Certified CGC Evaluator.

New message from AKC:  "The Canine Good Citizen® program is a noncompetitive activity that promotes responsible dog ownership. The number of Canine Good Citizens continued to increase, with more than 25,000 dogs taking the 10-step CGC test in 2003. The program promotes awareness of responsible dog ownership as an alternative to breed-specific legislation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture adopted CGC as part of the dog-training program at the National Detector Dog Center. The Boy Scouts of America added CGC to its dog-care merit badge requirements and used AKC materials in creating the section of the merit badge study guide that focuses on breed identification.

The state legislatures of New Hampshire and Washington passed resolutions endorsing CGC."

     Competition Obedience

These classes are held for people wanting to compete with their dog or want to their pet to be a more obedient member of their family. If you want to have a dog that can compete for obedience titles and other obedience competitions, you will want to sign up for these classes. Some private instruction would be beneficial for competition obedience. It may take more than 1 class to achieve instruction at each level. Listed below are the different levels of competition classes and the exercises targeted. For specific titling criteria, check with the registry in which you wish to compete.

  • Sub-Novice (4-H), Pre-Novice (AKC ), & Novice - Heeling on and off-lead. Figure 8. Stand for Exam. Recalls and finishes. Also, group sit and down stays.

  • Grad-Novice (4-H and AKC optional titling class)- Heel on lead and off-lead Figure 8. Drop on recall.  Dumbbell recall. Recall over high jump. Recall over broad jump.3 minute down with handler out of sight.

  • Open - Retrieving a dumbbell on flat and over high jump.  Drop on recall. Broad Jump.

  • Graduate Open (4-H and AKC optional titling class)-Utility class exercises

  • Utility - Signal exercise. Scent articles. Directed glove retrieve. Moving Stand. Directed jumping.

  • Versatility (AKC optional titling class)- 2 exercises from the Novice, Open, and Utility classes.

Pictured here Wezel doing Utility scent articles.

    4-H Dog Obedience

Kids 8 and older enrolled in dog obedience as a 4-H project may be in this special class. There is a 8 dog minimum for this class to be held. 4-H'ers are encouraged to enroll in the appropriate competition classes above.

    Pre-Agility Obedience

This is offered as a class or as private instruction. Geared towards what your dog needs to do agility, including: dog's controlled movement on both sides of handler, watching handler's hands for direction, coming when called , sit/stay and down/stay (for starting line and "Pause Table" control).

Pictured here is Kath Cook and Bella vom Highland Haus, ("Wezel") competing in AKC Agility Trial (Novice Standard Preferred class).

   Rally Obedience

This is a new form of competition obedience. The dog
and handler move through a course of signs, set up to direct
movement through the course and  to execute or maneuver
certain exercises. AKC, UKC, and APDT offers 3 levels.

AKC Rally Novice, Rally Advanced, and Rally Excellent.
APDT Level I, II, and III.

Pictured here is Kath Cook and Gidget vom Mika-Ashmead showing at an AKC Rally trial (Novice Rally class is done on leash).

   Agility

Agility is a fast paced dog sport. Teaching your dog to go over or through
obstacles such bar jumps, tire jump, tunnels, teeter-totter, elevated dog walk, and weave poles. Dogs must learn to take direction from handler, to stay on course on safely navigate contact obstacles. This class is fun and can either be for fun or readying for AKC Agility competition.

 Tracking

Tracking is a great sport that is putting the trust in your dog's natural ability to follow scent (tat we can't see or smell).  We teach ground scenting (instead of air scenting). Dog learn to follow scent in straight lines, turns, finding and "indicating article" dropped, and changes in cover. This can help with search-and-rescue and tracking competitions.

Pictured here is Kath Cook and Wezel after earning an
AKC TD (Tracking Dog title). Thanks Judges Billie French
    and Terri McGauley.

Items to bring with you to class:
1). Treats for rewarding your dog. Please make sure they are small. Hotdogs cut into dime size
pieces work well, as does thawed Biljac frozen dog food. If you choose to use dog biscuits,
make sure they can be broken into small pieces. A favorite toy can substitute.
2.)  A 6’ leash. Nylon or leather works well (do not use a chain leash or "flexy lead").
3.)  A training collar. Chain with ring on either end. I will show you how to put it on your dog properly.
4}  A bowl and water for your dog.
